Project Overview

Survey Air were instructed to create a high-resolution 3D building model of 18 Smith Square, Westminster, to support a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) inspection on behalf of the Local Government Association (LGA).

The objective was to provide an accurate digital representation of the building, enabling their surveyors to view and interact with the 3D building model to virtually assess condition of the roof areas, elevations, and façade features.

Challenge

Access to certain parts of the building, such as the lightwells and upper elevations, was limited due to confined operating spaces and the presence of trees to the front elevations, resulting in safety and logistical concerns.

Additionally, the property was situated in a highly congested area near Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, requiring specific airspace approvals and safety mitigations to ensure seamless execution of the survey.

Approach

We utilised a combination of automated flight missions and manual flying to collect the data. Automated missions to cover open areas, while manual flying by our skilled UAV pilots allowed for extensive data capture in hard-to-reach areas.

The data collection was completed in two days with prior airspace approval obtained, and the 3D building model was processed and delivered to the client, providing accurate, actionable insights for their future maintenance activities.
