Project Overview

Our client was instructed to undertake an acquisition survey of a prime build-to-suit, distribution warehouse totalling over 550,000 sq ft, comprising one of three national DHL hubs serving the East Midlands, the North and Scotland.

The purpose of the drone survey was to support inspection of the roof and high-level areas, record the condition and provide sufficient data for the surveyors to deliver informed analysis within their reports.

Challenge

The building is extremely large, making it difficult to operate the drone from one location only, and it was important to keep away from roads and access points due to the presence of a high number of heavy goods and delivery vehicles.

Due to the size and nature of construction, a significant amount of homogeneous imagery was to be expected, which can increase the difficulty of navigating the data capture for pilots on-site and assessment of the data delivery.

Approach

During the pre-flight planning process, it was necessary to determine suitable pilot positioning and movement to ensure operational areas were not disrupted and the aircraft remained in visual line of sight (VLOS) at all times.

Our skilled drone pilots followed traditional survey methodology, a comprehensive top-down approach of key building elements, supported with an interactive map showing the photo locations via our dedicated client portal.
