Project Overview

Survey Air were instructed to assist a team of surveyors in assessing the condition of Hamlet Industrial Estate to advise on the energy efficiency of the industrial buildings and likely remedial works to comply with new MEES regulations.

The site comprises up to 10no separate buildings of various sizes and construction types, and the overall poor condition of the roof coverings and associated elements increased the risk of intrusion from overgrown vegetation or nesting birds.

Challenge

As the building types within the estate varied in size and construction, our pilots used different inspection methodologies for each unit. Due to the close proximity of the River Thames, high winds and natural hazards were to be expected.

Our team also encountered a high number of birds on site and our flight path had to be mitigated accordingly. The extent of the survey was restricted but due to highly skilled piloting, all roof areas were captured for assessment by the surveyors.

Approach

To complete the survey in one day, it required a lot of movement and communication between our flight team to navigate the site and record accurate data methodically, albeit in unfavourable conditions with birds and high winds.

Hamlet Industrial Estate comprises of many operational industrial units with use of heavy goods vehicles and mechanical plant. As a result, our team ensured that all correct PPE was worn during our inspection including hard hats, safety boots and high-vis jackets.
