Project Overview
Survey Air completed an aerial survey of Leicester Train Station to assist with a landlord condition report of the roofs and high-level areas, also incorporating the rooflights to the main building and other architectural features.
All relevant parties were informed of the drone survey beforehand, including but not limited to Network Rail, on-site management and staff, with site-specific RAMS and other pre-flight planning documentation circulated to provide evidence of a safe operation.

Challenge
Due to the close proximity of the train tracks, prior notification to Network Rail was required in order to adhere to Network Rail Standards, also the Life Saving Rules when operating drones within the area of Network Rail Infrastructure.
The site had significant operational constraints, such as the location of the train tracks and bus stops fronting the property. The area was highly congested with travelling rail commuters and mitigations to avoid electromagnetic interference from the live tracks.
Approach
As the majority of the station is situated above live train tracks, our team followed the correct safety procedures, and identified a suitable position to operate the aircraft and maintain visual line of sight (a legal requirement).
Using a drone ensured no requirement for scaffolding or other access equipment which would have been a significant cost. Close inspection of various elements of the roof and related areas was achieved as a result.
