Project Overview
Christchurch Power Station was built in 1903 as a generating station to serve the Bournemouth and Poole area. The historic power station is one of the most complete early stations to have survived in England.
The drone survey aimed to encompass all roof areas and prominent features like pitched roofs, flat roofs, rooflights, and rainwater goods, where closer examination was required to evaluate their condition.

Challenge
Due to the close proximity of a live electrical substation, pylon and overhead cables, specific flight mitigations were necessary to ensure operational safety and maintain appropriate separation distances at all times.
There are many electrical hazards that carry a risk when flying a drone near high voltage switchgear, and should it get close to or contact the drone itself, it could pose a serious threat of injury or death to others.
Approach
We conducted the drone survey equipped with suitable PPE and positioned our take-off and landing site in multiple locations to maintain visual line of sight (VLOS) and ensure safe distances from overhead cables.
Adhering to pre-flight protocols was crucial for executing the operation with safety and efficiency. By following these procedures, we successfully completed the drone survey capturing comprehensive high-level imagery with no issues.
