Project Overview

Survey Air were instructed to carry out a comprehensive aerial survey and 3D model of Portman Square House, 100,000 sq ft of grade A office accommodation with ground floor retail space, located next to Baker Street and Oxford Street.

The purpose of the survey was to support initial analysis into the façade of the building, in particular the masonry and concrete elements, for the surveyors and structural engineers to collaborate and assess potential repairs.

Challenge

The building is extremely large, making it difficult to gain access to inspect many areas on the roof and elevations, contains a significant amount of glazed areas and set within a no-fly zone in controlled airspace.

Due to the number of adjacent buildings, and vehicular traffic on the roads, we identified many inherent risks and hazards which require specific mitigations to ensure operation safety while achieving a consistent data capture.

Approach

Survey Air established a unique inspection methodology for the building, detailing safe flight routes and allowing for sufficient overlaps and gimbal rotations to avoid major issues when post-processing the 3D model for delivery.

Using a drone ensured no requirement for scaffolding or other access equipment which would have been a significant cost. In coordination with on-site staff, our team managed to achieve the data capture in one day.
