Journey to Becoming a GVC Qualified Drone Pilot: Jem Karaceylan

My passion for aviation has been a constant throughout my life, shaped by my family’s involvement in a local gliding club. Earning my gliding license at the age of 14 sparked my deep interest in flight and airmanship, which laid a solid foundation for my career in aviation and engineering.
During my final year at university and as a postgraduate, I worked with a glass subcontractor, where I developed engineering drawings used by architects and mechanical engineers. This practical experience helped bridge the gap between my technical studies and real-world engineering applications.
I recently obtained my Flyer ID and GVC certifications, which are key qualifications for drone pilots, and as I begin my career at Survey Air, I’m excited to apply my background in aviation and engineering to the growing field of drone surveying.
Flyer ID – A Beginner’s Guide
The Flyer ID is the first step for anyone looking to pilot a drone in the UK. Issued by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), it’s a requirement for anyone flying a drone weighing over 250g.
The process involves passing an online theory test covering the basics of safe drone operation, airspace awareness, and legal responsibilities, which lays the groundwork for responsible drone use.
Personally, the Flyer ID was the gateway to understanding just how much care and consideration goes into piloting a drone or unmanned aircraft. It’s not just flying a toy—it’s navigating airspace, respecting privacy, and protecting safety.
GVC Drone Pilot Training
The General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) represents a significant step forward for any aspiring drone pilot aiming to operate in a professional capacity.
It authorises flights in more complex environments, including operations in congested areas and near infrastructure or people—scenarios that demand a higher level of technical understanding and operational discipline.
Undertaking the GVC involved a combination of ground school training, a theory examination, and a practical flight assessment. Through this process, I developed a solid foundation in flight planning, airspace awareness, risk management, and emergency response procedures—skills that are critical in ensuring both safety and compliance during commercial drone operations.
Achieving the GVC has strengthened my confidence not only in my piloting capabilities, but also in my ability to approach each project with the professionalism and technical rigour expected in engineering and surveying sectors.
Applying My Skills & Qualifications
From the outset, I’ve had the opportunity at Survey Air to contribute to a range of aerial survey projects, where I’ve been able to apply my training in flight planning, operational safety, and data capture with precision and attention to detail.
Whether supporting roof inspections, capturing topographic imagery, or assisting with media projects, my Flyer ID and GVC play a crucial role in ensuring each flight is conducted safely, legally, and in line with industry best practices.
These certifications are far more than formalities—they are integral to the way we operate at Survey Air. They underpin the quality, safety, and reliability of the services we provide and enable us to deliver accurate, high-value data to our clients with confidence.
Conclusion
The field of drone surveying is evolving rapidly, with innovations in autonomous flight systems, 3D modelling, and AI-powered data analysis continually expanding what’s possible. It’s an exciting time to be entering the industry, and the potential for growth and impact is immense.
Earning my Flyer ID and GVC marks the beginning of this journey. I’m committed to building on this foundation by pursuing further training, developing new technical capabilities, and contributing to Survey Air’s position at the forefront of drone-based surveying solutions.
This role represents more than just a career step—it’s an opportunity to be part of a technological shift in how we collect, interpret, and apply spatial data to better understand and shape the environment.
